In Sevastopol, online scammers ask… to borrow money. How a naive (but effective) “scheme” works
CrimeaPRESS reports:
In Sevastopol, the victims of online scammers were a 58-year-old man and two women aged 38 and 47, who transferred a total of 185 thousand rubles to the attackers. In all cases, the victims “lent money” to acquaintances.
It was established that all victims received messages in popular instant messengers from supposedly their friends, neighbors and relatives with a request to borrow money for a short period of time. Thinking that they were helping their friends, residents of Sevastopol transferred the required amounts to the accounts provided by the scammers— reported the Ministry of Internal Affairs for the city of Sevastopol.
IMPORTANT: attackers mislead their potential victims by addressing them by name in messages, and also send a photo of a bank card with the last and first name of a person they know and the details of an account controlled by the scammers.
Sevastopol police warn:
There is no need to rush to respond to requests to borrow money that come on behalf of friends and relatives! These could be remote scammers. If you are asked to borrow money to pay rent, repay a loan, or for other urgent needs, you need to call your friends or family back and make sure that they are the ones who carry out the correspondence in instant messengers and social networks.
