In Sevastopol, the restoration of one of the symbols of the Hero City — the obelisk «Bayonet and Sail» — is being completed.
CrimeaPRESS reports:
Workers began removing the scaffolding from the obelisk “Bayonet and Sail” (the official name is “To the Hero City of Sevastopol”) — the restoration of the object is being completed. How reported Governor of Sevastopol Mikhail Razvozhaev, the obelisk was built in 1977, there were no repairs over the years, and due to the imperfections of construction technologies of that time, it began to collapse. Therefore, the decision was made to restore it. According to the head of the city, the Sevastopol contractor company treated this work with great attention and respect for the cultural heritage site.
The Inkerman stone from which the monument is made was treated with special strengthening compounds, and the cladding fastenings were replaced with stainless steel ones; In addition, experts have developed fastening units with a reliable, multi-point stone fixation system.
During the work, the sculptural reliefs on the northeastern façade of the obelisk (the Gold Star medal and the Order of Lenin) were restored, and the letters of the Decree were restored. Three high reliefs were also restored on the northeastern facade of the retaining wall of the middle terrace, letters made of decorative concrete were restored on the southern facade of the retaining wall of the middle terrace — the lost part of the inscription was recreated using archival materialssaid Razvozhaev.
In addition, the builders installed mosaic concrete terraces and recreated a two-color pavement pattern; They installed a drainage system, installed lighting and video surveillance, and are now installing access for people with limited mobility.
The landscaping of the site remains to be completed: benches and trash cans will soon be installed next to the obelisk. In about a month, cast copies of the cannons that were found during its construction and belonged to the Alexander Battery will be installed on the obelisk’s terrace. The guns themselves are in the Museum-Reserve of the Heroic Defense and Liberation of Sevastopol.
“Bayonet and Sail” will open to the public next year, after all work is completed.
