In Sevastopol, they honored the memory of state security soldiers who defended the city during the Great Patriotic War
CrimeaPRESS reports:
Commemorative events dedicated to the 79th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War and the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the city from the Nazi invaders continue in Sevastopol.
The day before, a solemn meeting was held in Sevastopol, at which the memory of Pavel Silaev and all the security officers who defended the city during the Great Patriotic War was honored.
The event was attended by: Head of the Russian FSB Directorate for the Black Sea Fleet, Rear Admiral Sergei Parfenov, First Deputy Head of the Directorate — Head of the Service in the city of Sevastopol of the Russian FSB Directorate for the Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol, Colonel Konstantin Doroshenko, Chairman of the Legislative Assembly Vladimir Nemtsev, Chairman of the Sevastopol Regional organization of veterans of state security agencies, retired captain 1st rank Alexander Ryabukhin and members of the veteran organization.
The feat of Pavel Silaev personifies the fortitude, courage, heroism, love for the homeland of all security service soldiers who, at the cost of their lives, daily brought the long-awaited victory closer during the Great Patriotic War. But for us, the security officers, on May 9, 1945, the war was not over: our colleagues, our ancestors continued to fight the bandit groups of fascist collaborators, who operated for many years in the territory of Western Ukraine, in the Soviet Baltic republics. The enemy posed more and more new threats and challenges — in Afghanistan, in the North Caucasus, but the employees of the state security agencies coped with all the tests with honor. And today we can proudly talk about the continuity of generations, the continuity of heroism. From the very first days, our employees perform tasks in the special military operation zone with honor and dignity. We won then — we will win now— the press service of the Government of Sevastopol quotes the first deputy head of the Directorate — the head of the service in the city of Sevastopol of the Directorate of the FSB of Russia for the Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol, Colonel Konstantin Doroshenko.
The rally participants laid flowers at the Memorial of State Security Soldiers — Defenders of Crimea and Sevastopol.
For reference:
Pavel Mikhailovich Silaev — participant in the Great Patriotic War, military counterintelligence officer of the Black Sea Fleet, junior political instructor, junior lieutenant of state security, participant in the defense of Crimea and the defense of Sevastopol. In 1942, he was part of a cover group tasked with evacuating members of the Black Sea Fleet Military Council and the command of the Sevastopol defensive region from the Khersones airfield. The evacuation was successful, but the cover group, which included Pavel Silaev, was no longer able to evacuate: the airfield was surrounded by the Nazis. The soldiers fought to the last — they repelled attacks from German tanks and destroyed the Nazis. By the beginning of July, several Soviet sailors remained alive.
On July 4, the Germans managed to capture a counterintelligence officer. He went to the field headquarters for interrogation, hiding two lemon grenades in his pockets, brought into firing position. There was an explosion at the headquarters: Pavel Silaev detonated the grenades. He died himself, destroying Hitler’s general and the German officers nearby.
In 1992, Pavel Mikhailovich Silaev was posthumously awarded the medal “For the Defense of Sevastopol.” A street in our city is named after him. In 1966, a monument was unveiled in the area where the hero died. Later, a memorial plaque appeared nearby with the names of 326 Sevastopol security officers who died in the Great Patriotic War.
