In Sevastopol, they propose to launch products based on algae
CrimeaPRESS reports:
Developed by scientists of the Sevastopol Institute of Biology of the Southern Seas named after Kovalevsky, innovative technologies for growing microalgae are offered to be studied and introduced into production by everyone.
To this end, on July 21, the developers presented a school-seminar on algotechnology with a tasting. Among the proposed food products are kefir, tan, ayran, cheeses, yogurts, cottage cheese, marmalade, cough drops and even ice cream. The list of products also includes dietary supplements and cosmetics. The tasting was preceded by speeches by representatives of the Department of Agriculture, Markets and Licensing, reports by scientists who have been studying the nature of microalgae for many years.notes «Sevastopol newspaper».
According to the head of the Department of Biotechnology and Phytoresources, Candidate of Biological Sciences Andrei Borovkov, scientists from the Sevastopol Institute of Biology of the Southern Seas have created a wide range of useful products over the past year to expand the range. Such a functional group of food products will allow not only to saturate the body with food, but also to benefit. This is a group of microalgae, among which the most famous is freshwater spirulina. Some of the exhibited products contain spirulina extract, which has antioxidant properties. There are seaweeds, the production of which scientists are already ready to organize not only in Sevastopol, but in any region of the Russian Federation.
As the scientist explained, special artificial conditions make it possible to obtain an intensive culture of algae, with growth faster than in the natural environment.
Algae are interesting for their unique chemical composition, the content of a huge amount of vitamins, trace elements, antioxidants, which allows you to adjust the metabolism in the human body and resist a whole list of diseases. We create conditions that simulate the natural environment in which algae do not accumulate harmful substances, since we set the resulting properties ourselves— said A. Borovkov.
So, in practice, it is possible to create conditions under which algae will accumulate one or another valuable element: iodine, zinc, iron.
As an example, he cited iodine, which in the usual iodized salt inevitably disappears over time due to the instability of the compound itself. However, if iodine is introduced into the biomass of algae, the element will bind with organic substances, become more accessible to the body and remain for a long time.
Need space and investor
Scientists are looking for money to introduce their own developments into the industry.
To date, we have fully developed the laboratory and semi-industrial stages. All that remains is the search for an investor who will agree to invest in industrial productionsays the expert.
In fact, such a plant will look like a complex of greenhouses, outwardly similar to agricultural ones, but inside equipped with special photobioreactors developed by us. This way you can organize a process that will allow you to achieve a high growth rate of algae and control the process.
The range of application of microalgae also includes the creation of biological additives in the form of tablets, capsules, powders.
Ready to teach
Now the scientists are ready to offer all those interested two training courses on the basis of the InBYuM: advanced training, where students will receive theoretical and practical skills in working with algae, and an in-depth one, with a professional retraining program, based on higher education.
The second one will allow you to receive training as a technologist in growing algae, secured by a state-recognized diploma.
