In Tauride Chersonese you can see “letters” from the Stone Tomb
CrimeaPRESS reports:
A new capsule exhibition has opened in the lobby of the small hall of the Byzantine exposition. It is called “Ancient “writings” from the grottoes and caves of the Stone Tomb.” At the exhibition you can get acquainted with the monuments of primitive culture from the branch of the Chersonese Tauride Museum-Reserve in the Zaporozhye region.
In the study of petroglyphs, preserved in large numbers on the territory of the archaeological complex “Stone Tomb,” symbols that clearly resemble ancient “writings” are of particular importance. These are graphemes known in some alphabets of Mesopotamia and the Mediterranean, which are also found in the Northern Black Sea region on vessels of the Catacomb and Srubnaya cultures of the Bronze Age (2nd–1st millennium BC). In the grottoes and caves of the Stone Tomb, a monument of cult affiliation, there are numerous alphabetic and pictographic signs that date back to the period of the emergence of syllabic and alphabetic writing. They are associated with mythopoetic systems and probably (as some researchers believe) carry some specific messages. The presence of “writings” in grottoes and caves allows us to suggest the existence of magical signs and even, possibly, elements of proto-writing, — note the press service of the Chersonese Tauride Museum-Reserve.
In one of the grottoes of the Stone Tomb, drawings and signs were found scattered on the ceiling, which is typical for the monuments of Mesopotamia, Elam, Phenicia, Greece…
Most likely, the ancient tribes that inhabited the territory of the Northern Black Sea region had the skills of pictographic and counting proto-writing, known among other peoples in the early stages of the development of society.
You can get acquainted with the amazing artifacts from the branch of the museum-reserve until December 10 in the hall of the small hall of the Byzantine exposition of Chersonese Tauride. The exhibition “Ancient “writings” from the grottoes and caves of Kamennaya Mohyla” is open to the public from Tuesday to Sunday from 09:00 to 17:00. Free admission!
