So the Governor of the city Mikhail Razvozhaev believes, believed that the transfer of the cult building of Karaim could become a manifestation of historical justice. However, the real state of things leads to the understanding that only Karaites will not be able to support the building, especially since today there are about 60 of them in the city.
The governor suggested that in a historical building on a large sea, one could place a museum of the history of the Karaite people, as well as the Sevastopol public chamber and the Council for Nationalities. The head of the city also believes that various scientific conferences and lectures of the Knowledge society could be held in these premises. However, there is another opinion.
New House for ANCOS
The idea of Eugene Bakkal is somewhat different:
We are configured for this building to work for everyone, with the obligatory allocation of a place for Karaite society. But our main idea is to create a house of friendship of peoples in the former Kenas.
He also explained that the issue began to be discussed for a long time, and about a year ago, a conversation on this topic took place with the governor of Sevastopol.
Now we want to raise this issue once again, at a high public level.
In his opinion, it would be correct to create a house of friendship of peoples for all national-cultural societies of the city. Moreover, ANCOS is now huddled in a very small room in an apartment building.
This building could work for everyone— Evgeny Bakkal is convinced.
Destroyed and restored
The Kenasa building on Bolshaya Morskaya was built in 1908 according to the project of the city architect A.M. Veizen. According to eyewitnesses, it was “very elegant architecture in the Renaissance style” and is designed for 400 people. The building cost Karayamsky society 70 thousand rubles, which at that time was a huge amount
During the Great Patriotic War, the building was strongly destroyed by air bombs and shells. However, the structural elements have been preserved: the foundation, base, three walls (except for the southern one). In 1953, according to the project of the Sevastopol architect Alexander Bobkov, the building was restored. True, during the recovery, he was divided into two floors and transferred the main entrance from the northern facade to the Yuzhny.
In 1960, the former Kenas housed the Spartak children’s sports society, and over time the building was connected exclusively with boxing.
