Insulin pumps for patients with diabetes began to be installed in Sevastopol

CrimeaPRESS reports:

Today, three young patients of City Hospital No. 5 received one of the most modern and safe methods for a comfortable and fulfilling life with type 1 diabetes. For the first time this year, insulin pumps were installed in the children’s hospital as an alternative to using syringe pens. Now high-tech medical care is available to Sevastopol children close to home. With the installation of the device, the child does not need to undergo painful injections 5-8 times a day. The pump allows you to dose insulin in smaller increments and with greater accuracy, specifically tailored to the individual needs of a small patient.

The insulin pump is designed on the principle of an electronic syringe: the device continuously supplies insulin from a special reservoir into the subcutaneous fat, depending on the physiological needs of the body. Thanks to this device, our patients will be able to lead a normal life. All children who will be fitted with an insulin pump will continue to undergo outpatient follow-up – The press service of the Government of Sevastopol quotes the chief freelance pediatric endocrinologist of the Department of Health, Marina Lipskas.

The device requires individual settings for each patient. Leading researcher, pediatric endocrinologist at the Institute of Pediatric Endocrinology, National Medical Research Center for Endocrinology, Andrei Emelyanov, came to help our specialists with this.

This device allows you to get rid of the regular administration of insulin with syringes or pens, since when using a pump, the medicine enters the child’s body through a special catheter in a dose prescribed by the doctor and at a certain frequency — which is to some extent close to the natural secretion of insulin by a healthy pancreasthe specialist emphasizes.

The device has a service life of five years, consumables are replaced every three days. To teach parents and patients how to use an insulin pump, lectures will be held over several days in which they will acquire the technical and practical knowledge necessary for the child to continue to have an active and quality life.
