Is it profitable to take a vacation in May and how the upcoming holidays will affect the salary — the lawyer tells

In early May 2025, Russians traditionally expect a long weekend. About whether this will affect labor wages and whether it is profitable to take a vacation in May, says Alexander Yuzhalin, the head of legal practice in Superjob.

This year, employees working on a five -day working week will rest:

First May: from May 1 to May 4 inclusive. Of them:

• May 1 — non -working holiday;
• May 2 — a weekend transferred from the New Year holidays;
• May 3 and 4 — Saturday and Sunday.

The working day on April 31 should be reduced by one hour as a pre -holiday day.

Second May: from May 8 to May 11 inclusive. Of them:

• • May 8 — a weekend postponed from February 23;
  • May 9 — non -working holiday;
  • May 10 and 11 — Saturday and Sunday.

Based on the production calendar of the five -day working week, in May there will be 18 working days and 144 working hours in May.

Salary in May

The wages of workers who receive a salary should not be reduced due to an additional weekend. Holidays only mean that the cost of one working day will be slightly higher compared to the other months of the year. Stimulating and compensation payments (bonuses, allowances, surcharges) should also be paid in a general manner in accordance with the established system of remuneration.

For employees, the employees have labor wages or those whose work is paid by the hourly tariff rate, the situation is slightly different. Their wages depends on the time of execution or on the result.

If there are few working days in the month, such employees may have less wages than in “ordinary” months. For such people, Art. 112 of the Labor Code of the Russian Federation provides for a guarantee: if employees (who do not receive a salary) are not involved in work on holidays, the employer must pay them an additional reward. Its size is determined by the employer itself. In other words, if such a person does not work on May 1 or 9, he must receive an additional reward over these days. If the employee will work on weekends or non -working days, payment for this day will have to be made in double size.

There are differences from “ordinary” workers who work according to a shift schedule. The schedule may include a working day on May holidays, and a person will have to go to work. But you need to take into account: if the change falls on May 1 or 9, these days should also be paid in an increased amount.

Advance in May

The difference in wages for May can only be expressed in the amount of the advance (wages for the first half of the month). The fact is that wages are paid every half a month for the time actually worked by the employee.

Since in the first half of May there are less working days than in the second, the advance will be less than the usual amount. But the final part of the wages (final calculation for a month), on the contrary, will be larger, due to which the total wage will remain the same.

Vacation in May

The different cost of the working day in different months of the calendar year may affect the choice of vacation dates. There is a simple rule: the less working days in a month, the less profitable it is to take a vacation (since the cost of one working day in such a month can be more than the payment of vacation for average earnings).

From this point of view, May is far from the most profitable month for vacation (if it is important not to lose income). In May there will be only 18 working days, less — only in January. Therefore, using vacation in May, the employee must be ready for the fact that the total income for the month will be slightly below the usual.
