CrimeaPRESS reports:
And also one case of tick-borne encephalitis.
According to the Interregional Department of Rospotrebnadzor, two peaks of tick activity are recorded in Crimea: spring-summer (May-June) and summer-autumn (August-September). Doctors organized constant dynamic monitoring of the process of registering citizens’ complaints about tick bites, as well as cases of diseases transmitted through tick bites.
Since the beginning of the year and as of May 13, the population’s appeal to medical organizations on the peninsula regarding tick bites does not exceed the long-term average. The highest percentage of people bitten by ticks is observed when visiting forested areas, park areas and areas with densely planted vegetation. Since the beginning of the year, 9 cases of ixodid tick-borne borreliosis (also 9 cases in 2023) and 1 case of tick-borne encephalitis have been registered in the Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol— reported in Rospotrebnadzor.
Experts emphasize that in conditions of possible infection of ticks by pathogens of tick-borne infections, the priority is to carry out nonspecific prevention measures, namely acaricidal treatments and monitoring their effectiveness. Since March 2024, acaricidal treatments have begun in the territories of municipalities in Crimea, 1199 hectares of territory have been treated.
In accordance with the sanitary legislation of the Russian Federation on the prevention of tick-borne infections, all owners of properties located in forests and park areas, places of public recreation are required to carry out acaricidal treatments for entomological indications in the adjacent territories. The population is also recommended to carry out grass mowing, dead wood removal and acaricidal treatments in courtyard areas of the private sector, summer cottages and household plots.
Tick-borne infections can also be prevented with the help of specific prophylaxis and seroprophylaxis. Vaccination against tick-borne encephalitis is carried out throughout the year, with the condition that during the epidemic season, for 2 weeks after vaccination, one should be careful not to visit a natural focus. Persons who have not been vaccinated against tick-borne encephalitis, in the event of a tick bite, must be administered anti-tick immunoglobulin, the administration of which is desirable after receiving the results of a tick or blood test— specified in Rospotrebnadzor.
Since the beginning of the year, 1,798 people belonging to the risk group have been vaccinated against tick-borne viral encephalitis in Crimea — foresters, students undergoing practical training in mountain forest areas and people traveling to territories endemic for tick-borne viral encephalitis.
