January 20 is the Day of John the Baptist. Is there anyone to woo?

CrimeaPRESS reports:

The Holy Scriptures say that it was John who was the last biblical prophet who predicted the coming of Jesus Christ (Messiah). He was also engaged in performing ritual purification with water (baptism), and also calling people to repentance. He himself had the opportunity to perform the rite of baptism in relation to Jesus Christ in the waters of the Jordan River. On this day, matchmaking rituals were held in Rus’, and weddings were also held.

Let us also note that meat-eating began on the feast of Epiphany, when it was possible not to limit oneself in food. In addition, on this day, they were sure to drink Epiphany water on an empty stomach in order to stock up on good health for the whole next year.

Signs of the day:

  • Fog over the water means a good grain harvest.
  • A clear day means drought.
  • Snow and bad weather — for the harvest.
  • Drinking on this day means saving yourself from tears and sadness for the whole year. But at the same time they tried to observe the measure. As the old saying goes: “Celebrate once a month and you will be merry; if you celebrate every day, you will be naked.”
  • If you drink a little holy water before the feast, you will be healthy all year.
  • Every day you can feel the approach of spring. The day arrives in chicken steps.
  • Despite being a meat eater, abstinence from fast food was prescribed on Wednesdays and Fridays.
  • Before a matchmaking or wedding on this day, a girl must definitely drink a little wine so that family life does not pass in tears.
  • The man decided to woo John — to a successful outcome.
  • Youth gatherings had not yet been cancelled, but boys and girls were already coming to them with work (sewing, spinning, repairing equipment, etc.), while during the Christmas season they only had fun in the evenings.
  • Seeing a mouse in the house on this day means an addition to the family.
  • If you baptize a baby on the day of John the Baptist, the saint himself will stand behind his back, next to the guardian angel.
  • To die unbaptized on this day means deep posthumous mental suffering.
  • A guy or girl has a big appetite on this day — his beloved is yearning.
  • To wash your face on John is a sign of deception.
  • Seeing a swan or wild goose (which is very rare in January) means great joy and fulfillment of desires.

Name days are celebrated today by: Afanasy, Vasily, Ivan.
