January 3 – Half-feed. You can “sweep” happiness
CrimeaPRESS reports:
January 3 – this day was also popularly called Half Feed, since by this time half of the feed stored for the livestock for the winter had run out. They also considered whether there would be enough hay and straw until spring; they ventilated the barns and barns, stirred up the grain, chased away the mice, calling this activity “feeding the barns and turning the grain.” They wondered, putting their ear to the grain: if you hear a buzzing sound, expect a restless summer, they called it “listening.”
The girls did not leave their houses that day, tirelessly sweeping the floors from the very morning, so as not to miss a grain, because if you sweep a lot, there will be a lot of happiness. The harvested grain was ground into flour and jelly was cooked and a lean pancake was baked. They had to be eaten by herself, not shared with anyone, and besides, the girl had to remain silent throughout the entire ritual, from sweeping up the grain to the last crumb of the pancake. While expecting happiness, you could also make a wish during the meal.
You can make this jelly today. To do this, dilute wheat flour in cold milk, then add boiling milk and, season with sugar and salt, cook until the jelly looks like porridge.
They also took note of the weather on this day, expecting a snowstorm after the scarlet sun at dawn, and believing that Prokopyev Day reflected the weather of September with a clear mirror.
The church honors the memory of St. Peter, Metropolitan of Moscow
This day is also dedicated to the memory of the holy great martyr Procopius of Caesarea. Christopher, his father, was a Christian, but Theodosius’ mother was a pagan, and she denounced her son to the emperor for leading the fight against the pagan faith.
Only Procopius’s steadfastness during torture made her repent and accept Christianity, along with many people who were not indifferent to the fate of the martyr.
