January 5 – Fedul Winter. Sorcerers are very powerful these days

CrimeaPRESS reports:

A simple and relaxing day. The birth of a child on this day was considered a good sign. Preferably in the evening, after sunset. It was believed that such a baby would grow up happy and be successful in all his endeavors. The children were named according to the Saints. Those born on January 5 were called Feduls, Vasilys, Davids, Nifonts, Pavls, Naums, Theoktists. The girls were given the name Anastasia — in honor of the saint, whose memory was celebrated the day before.

But there are quite a lot to accept for this day:

  • On Fedulov’s day it was necessary to diligently read the Holy Scriptures and pray to the Most Holy Theotokos.
  • Before Christmas, all work in the house was completed.
  • They were afraid to work with sharp objects (axes, awls, knives). Anyone who cuts himself on Fedul will be unwell all year. To this day, some people are wary of surgery on January 5 and try to reschedule the operation for another time.
  • You also can’t hem your hem, otherwise you’ll live less than you should.
  • In the old days they said: “Fedul came — the wind blew.” Usually this day was windy.
  • If the wind is accompanied by heavy snowfall, July will be stormy.
  • Snow in calm weather means a good harvest.
  • It was believed that on this day sorcerers performed the most powerful rituals, casting spells on livestock and their owners.
  • To protect domestic animals from disease, death and spoilage, on this day gingerbread was baked in the shape of sheep, cows, and cockerels. The baked goods were not eaten immediately, but were wrapped in a clean cloth (so that evil spirits would not spoil them) and placed in a secluded place — until Christmas.
  • A cat climbs into the oven — to frost. Trying to perch on the bend (a recess for coals and ash) — the cold will last a long time.
  • Chickens behave restlessly — a blizzard.
  • A horse snores — a snowstorm and prolonged bad weather.

Name days are celebrated today by: Pavel, Vasily, Naum, Ivan.
