The main event of July 11 was the gathering and harvesting of nettles for future use. It was believed that after this day it completely loses its healing properties. The people were sure that a burning plant in the most magical way gives a person strength and vigor. They made infusions, decoctions, ointments, etc. They also believed that nettles protected from the evil eye. They burned it and smoked it at home.
By the way, not only medicines were made from nettles. It was actively used in cooking: it was added to salads, soups, and even stuffing for pies was made from it. Moreover, the nettle among the Slavs was also used for the production of fabric, making it a worthy competitor to cotton and flax.
And on July 11, on the eve of Peter’s Day, it was customary to have fun. They led round dances, danced, arranged games and fun. The daredevils were looking for the flower of the grass «Peter’s cross» that night. There is a belief that the one who finds it will get rid of all diseases. In addition, a magical flower helps to look for treasures and provides the new owner with untold wealth. But finding the flower of the «Peter’s Cross» is not easy: only the most courageous people get it, and the most terrible visions are sent to those who decide to look for it. And only before those who overcome fear, a mysterious flower will appear!
The Church now honors the memory of the Monk Herman and Sergei of Valaam — the righteous and miracle workers. Little is known about their lives. Only that it was they who founded the Valaam Monastery.
As for signs, then:
- Working on this day is a sin. After that, you can become seriously ill.
- To see the morning dawn “playing” on the eve of Peter and Paul is fortunate.
- The cuckoo does not call — by early winter.
- Early leaf fall has begun — in September all the trees will be bare.
- If before Peter’s Day a woman weaves a nettle cloth, it will become a reliable remedy for back pain.
- If a person was bewitched (damaged or he is possessed by an evil spirit) — you need to put a leaf of nettle under his sole, and the evil forces will lag behind him.
- If on this day you sweep the floor with a nettle broom, you can sweep away all evil from it.
- For the nettle to be healing, it must be torn with bare hands, without fear of burns.
- Nettle, plucked before St. Peter’s Day, will be an excellent talisman for Scorpions and Aries.
- If a woman carries with her an amulet with Peter’s nettle, hooligans and rapists will bypass her.
