July 15 – Bereginya, Saint Photius Day. Bereginya sisters emerge from the water
CrimeaPRESS reports:
July 15 is the date when they paid tribute to mythical creatures — bereginyas. These are fairy-tale maidens, prototypes of mermaids. People believed that they came out of the water and sat on birch branches. Tradition of the day: embroidered towels with an image of a duck — one of the incarnations of the bereginya — were tied to birch branches. They were sometimes thrown into the water as a gift to the inhabitants of the underwater kingdom.
Our ancestors believed that if you do not properly appease the Bereginya sisters on this day, they could get angry and drag a person into the water with them or send an illness upon him. According to ancient legend, all human illnesses and fevers originate in water – the habitat of the Bereginyas and the water spirit. But if the Bereginyas are in a good mood, only good can be expected from them. According to popular belief, they protect livestock during watering, help the poor and fishermen, and give hay grass healing properties. In many regions, they are represented as beautiful girls who help peasant women weave and sew while the whole family is out mowing hay.
On July 15, the Church honors the memory of Saint Photius, Metropolitan of Kyiv and All Rus’. He ruled the Russian Church for 21 years, protecting the grandson of Dmitry Donskoy, Vasily Vasilyevich, from enemies and their intrigues. He was a mediator between Russian princes, whose relations often led to discord and quarrels.
Signs for July 15 are as follows:
- Are the leaves turning yellow already? Autumn and winter will be early.
- There were a lot of berries in the forest by July 15th – a sign that the winter would be frosty.
Today’s name days are celebrated by: Arsen, Arseny, Angelica, Valdemar, David, Ignatius, Mark, Maxim, Felix.
