July 16 – Poppy Day, Mokiy and Demid. Not a lucky day, they say…
CrimeaPRESS reports:
July 16, people considered, was a day… to put it mildly… unlucky. Due to such «fame» on this day they tried not to start new things, make large purchases, move, travel. The only task that was allowed to be solved was to collect poppy seeds. It was used as a filling for pastries: buns, pies, pasties. In addition, in the old days, poppy seeds were used to protect against evil sorcerers and apparitions of the dead.
July 16 was also called Stozhary. This is what the Slavs called the Pleiades cluster, located in the constellation Taurus. Its appearance promised luck to hunters, otherwise, on the contrary, it was not worth going into the forest, because there would be no prey. The Slavs treated the stars with special respect, since they believed that these were angels who lit the lights in the windows of their houses (not only on July 16) and looked at people from heaven.
The Church today honors the memory of Saints Mokius and Mark. They lived during the reign of Emperor Maximilian and were known as zealous Christians. According to legend, during the period of organized persecution, Mokius and Mark were arrested, and the pagans tried to force them to worship idols. According to legend, when the saints were being led to the altar, a small child came out in front of them, who began to interfere with them and did not let them pass. Then the pagans brutally beat the child, after which the brothers became even more convinced not to worship any idols and to continue to glorify Jesus Christ. As a result, they were beheaded.
As for the weather, the probability of severe thunderstorms and storms is higher than ever on July 16. And also:
- A spider weaving a web? Sunny weather is coming.
- The dog digs the ground, rolls on it, refuses food and sleeps a lot? To protracted bad weather.
- Lots of mosquitoes in the air means clear weather.
- The midges are buzzing around – it will be hot all week.
Today’s name days are celebrated by: Anatoly, Ivan, Anton, Alexander, Mark, Konstantin, Mikhail, Georgy, Vasily, Gerasim.
