July 18 – Athanasius of Athos Day. Show the Moon a purse of coins

CrimeaPRESS reports:

People believed that on July 18 the Moon gives its powers to people. By the way, they said that the Moon is celebrating its birthday today.

There is also a belief that before a particularly good harvest on this night the Moon becomes mobile: it circles across the sky, runs from place to place — in a word, behaves as if it were alive. In some Russian villages, they still believe that if the Moon «plays» — it celebrates its holiday in the sky. Having seen such a phenomenon, in the old days they called all family members from home. They believed that if you look at the sky at this hour, you can gain strength and health. But before that, you need to bow to it properly, ask for a good harvest, and then thank it.

And also on the new moon healers read spells, they believe in its power in the treatment of women’s and heart diseases. And to have money in your wallet, there is a sure way: show the heavenly body a wallet with coins.

Today, the Church honors the memory of St. Athanasius of Athos, who was born in Trebizond and became an orphan quite early. He was raised by a nun, and Athanasius loved her so much that he tried to imitate her in everything. He even took monastic vows while on the territory of the Kiminsky Monastery. Having achieved perfection in vigils and long fasts, he decided to undertake the feat of silence and settled in a secluded place not far from the monastery. The hermit often had to fight demons, who tried to arouse in him a feeling of hatred for the world around him. And one day, Athanasius almost succumbed to doubts, but decided to endure exactly 1 year, and then submit to the will of God. Suddenly, on the last day, a bright light poured from heaven, and Athanasius’ sinful thoughts dissipated in that very moment. After this, Afanasy received the gift of tenderness for his humility, and pilgrims began to come to his cell, who wanted to ask for help or advice. Tradition says that even the Mother of God herself appeared to Afanasy several times.
