July 23 — Anthony Day. Raster. Mermaids now weave lace

Why «rowan»? Because on July 23, a large amount of duckweed appears on reservoirs that fish eat. This plant also fed poultry and prepared fertilizers on its basis. The people, by the way, believed: where there are a lot of duckweed — mermaids live there. They did not collect the entire grass — they left a little. It was believed that from the duckweed mermaids weave lace and sew dresses for themselves.

Such a legend went about this simple grass among the people: as if it appeared on the ground thanks to the deity personifying the rain. Like the peasant, he plowed the water surface, planted it with plants — all for the benefit of man!

The church now honors the memory of Anthony of Pechersky, who was popularly called the Thunderbird. He is known mainly as the founder of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra. He was also called the patron saint of Russian monks. The Scripture says that Anthony had the gift of miracles and could heal the sick, predict various events. Today Anthony’s relics are not acquired.

As for the weather, the great importance on July 23 was attached to thunder. Most of interesting signs were connected with him:

• A thunderstorm began at night, and the frogs jump along the shore? By good weather.
• A sharp thunder on Anthony — there will be little rain. Little thunder — wait for the downpour. The thunder is quiet, heard as if from afar — the rain will end soon.
• The bees buzz loudly, dig, do not want to stay in the hive for a long time — to hot weather.
• It is impossible to drive home cattle under a canopy — to sunny weather.
• The pigeons cooled lazily — to heat.
• The flocks of raven are spinning and playing over their heads — by hot days.
• Heapers were covered with the whole sky — to a strong, squall wind.
• The stems of potatoes are turned upward, to the sky — to sunny weather. They drooped — to the rain.
• Rainbow in the morning — to a strong wind.
• Rozh ripened well — to a good bite of eel.
• A lot of midges at the evening fire — to good weather.
• In the well and in the river there are fewer water — to heat.
• Butterflies are not visible — to the rain.
• Snails high on trees — to heavy rain.
