July 23 – Anthony's Day. Cassock. Mermaids weave lace

CrimeaPRESS reports:

Why «Ryasochnik»? Because on July 23, a large amount of duckweed appears on water bodies, which fish feed on. This plant was also fed to poultry and fertilizers were prepared on its basis. By the way, people believed that where there is a lot of duckweed, mermaids live. They did not collect all the grass — they left a little. They believed that mermaids weave lace and sew dresses from duckweed.

There was a legend about this simple herb among the people: it was said that it appeared on Earth thanks to a deity personifying rain. Like a peasant, he plowed the water surface, planted it with plants — all for the benefit of man!

The Church now honors the memory of Anthony of the Caves, who was popularly called the Thunderer. He is known mainly as the founder of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra. He was also called the patron of Russian monks. The Scriptures say that Anthony had the gift of miracles and could heal the sick, predict various events. Today, Anthony’s relics have not been found.

As for the weather, thunder was of great importance on July 23. Most of the interesting signs were connected with it:

  • A thunderstorm started at night, and frogs are jumping along the shore? Good weather is coming.
  • Sharp thunder on St. Anthony’s Day — there will be a light rain. Booming thunder — expect a downpour. Quiet thunder, heard as if from afar — the rain will soon end.
  • Bees buzz loudly, swarm, and do not want to stay in the hive for long — hot weather is coming.
  • It is impossible to drive livestock under the canopy — it will be sunny.
  • Doves coo lazily — it’s warm.
  • Flocks of crows circle and play overhead – a sign of hot days.
  • Cumulus clouds covered the entire sky — leading to strong, gusty winds.
  • Potato stems facing upwards, towards the sky – to sunny weather. Drooping – to rain.
  • A rainbow in the first half of the day means a strong wind.
  • Well-ripened rye means good eel fishing.
  • Lots of midges around an evening fire mean good weather.
  • There is less water in the well and in the river — it will get warmer.
  • If you don’t see any butterflies, it’s going to rain.
  • Snails high in the trees mean heavy rain.
