July 29 – Afinogen Day. Birds sing quieter and quieter

CrimeaPRESS reports:

Sadly, in the old days they used to say that from July 29th the approach of autumn days is felt more and more strongly. And the birds sing more quietly, and it becomes cooler, and at night it gets even colder.

Our ancestors spent this day working in the fields. Whole villages would go there, and then sing songs. The owner usually walked ahead with a sheaf, and the workers followed him. The grain that stood in the house in the first sheaf was often used to treat illnesses. Several unharvested ears of corn on July 29 were also left in the field, which, according to belief, allowed for a rich harvest. They could not be picked, since, according to signs, they were intended for the Slavic god as a sacrifice.

The Church now honors the memory of Athenogenes and his nine disciples, who suffered for their faith in Christ during the persecutions organized in the city of Sebaste. One day, a local ruler named Philomarchus held a festival dedicated to pagan gods, ordering the townspeople to make sacrifices to the idols. However, many Sebasteans refused to do this, since they professed the Christian faith. As a result, the ruler ordered the apostates to be beaten. It turned out that Christianity in Sebaste was spread thanks to Athenogenes, whom they decided to arrest. The soldiers went to the temple, but found only 10 of Athenogenes’ disciples there, seized them and tortured them. Athenogenes himself came to the ruler and asked to free the innocent people. However, he himself was also imprisoned along with his disciples. After the trial, they were all first subjected to a great deal of torture, and then executed. Before his death, Athenogenes was able to hear the voice of God, who promised the tormentors death in hell, and the martyrs themselves a meeting in paradise.
