July 6 is a special day, because it is the eve of the holiday of Ivan Kupala. Our ancestors, the Slavs, believed that the herbs and plants collected today have a special power — the products prepared on their basis will be as effective as possible.
The Church today honors the memory of the holy martyr Agrippina (Agrafena), who, in her youth, decided to refuse marriage, and dedicated her life to serving the Lord. At that time, persecution against Christians was widespread, and therefore, soon Agrafena was arrested and subjected to torment, not wanting to abandon Christianity in favor of idolatry. For her faith, the girl received a reward — an angel freed her from the bonds of prison. However, Agrafena herself soon died in prison from her wounds. Three Christians buried her, and they noted that miracles began to happen at the tomb of Agrafena. She was nicknamed the swimsuit precisely for the reason that from this day mass bathing in reservoirs begins.
As for the night on Ivan Kupala: it is believed that it is on July 6 that the fern blooms, and if you find it, you can find a buried treasure. On the evening of this day, the girls put on their best outfits and went from house to house in them with the words: “Wash”, which meant that the girl needed to give some kind of jewelry — a ribbon, earrings, etc. The very same night on Ivan Kupala was considered mystical — it was called the time of werewolves, sorcerers and witches.
There are no weather signs for today, but there are household ones:
- “On Agrafena, the nightingale lost its voice through the yash ear,” barley is heading.
- «This turnip on Agrafena — it will be good.»
- Beginning of Full Summer. Collection of medicinal herbs and roots. Start harvesting winter wheat.
- The beginning of swimming in the rivers, as the water at this time has already warmed up enough.
- They wash and steam in the baths, where the floor is covered with herbs.
- White and cauliflower from cabbage butterflies are poured with infusion of tomato tops. Washing with a stream of cold water from a hose of each head of white cabbage works well. The color is covered with leaves.
- Buckwheat is small on Agrafena, oats are overgrown.
