June 10 — Day of Eugene Tikhoy. Something is happening in the fields…

CrimeaPRESS reports:

June 10th, in the folk calendar — Nikita the goose, Evtikhy. According to signs, if the day is quiet, then the harvest will be good. The date received its names in the folk calendar in honor of Nikita the Confessor and Eutychius, Bishop of Melitinsky, revered by the Orthodox Church on June 10.

There was another name for the day on June 10 — Noon. It was customary to honor special spirits that are very similar to ordinary women. They were beautiful and stately, they flew over the fields on hot summer days and lured the peasants who worked in the field into their nets. It was rumored that they could torture hard workers and deprive them of their male power. If a person saw such a flying woman on June 10, he had to close his eyes and say: “Lord, save me from temptation.” It was impossible to anger such spirits, otherwise they would become very angry and, according to signs, would do everything to dry up the fields, after which there would be no good harvest.

At this time, goslings begin to enter the water

They often die in dozens, becoming the prey of birds of prey and animals. Therefore, not without reason, our ancestors gave the geese a separate patron saint who guards the little geese, keeping hawks, eagles and other predators away from them.

Saint Nikita became the patron and protector of geese (domestic and wild). In the folk calendar, there are two Nikita-goose (hussars) — Nikita of Chalcedon (June 10) and the Great Martyr Nikita Goth (September 28). They seem to regulate the arrival and departure of wild geese, the time when goslings are born from eggs, and the timing of slaughtering poultry. In essence, St. Nikita perform practically the same functions, which, of course, served to unite them into one image.

If the adults on this day prayed to St. Nikita with a request to look after the poultry, then the children played «The Wolf and the Geese» (tags). It was one of the children’s favorite summer games.

On this day, pregnant women were specially sent to the field, because they believed that in this way the child would be able to gain a fortress comparable to a young ear. There was also a belief that if childbirth occurs on a grain field, then they will be easy, and the child will be born healthy. Also during this period, they paid attention to natural phenomena and tried to predict the weather for the coming days and months.

Commemoration of Our Reverend Father Nikita, Bishop of Chalcedon

June 10thOur reverend father Nikita, from a young age loved Christ; renouncing the world and all worldly attachments, he pleased God with his virtuous life, and was elevated to the throne of the Chalcedonian hierarchy, on which, like a candle standing on a candlestick, he shone the world and adorned the Church of Christ.

Saint Nikita was very merciful to the poor; he fed the greedy, clothed the naked, took strangers into his house and gave them rest; he was a father to orphans, an intercessor to widows, and a savior to all the offended.

When the hard times of the iconoclastic heresy came, during the reign of Leo the Armenian, Saint Nikita showed himself to be a courageous confessor of the name of Christ, for he struggled a lot in the fight against impious teaching, denouncing non-Orthodox dogmas, exhorting everyone with reverence to worship the icon of Christ the Lord and His Most Pure Mother of God, as well as icons and all other saints; the valiant confessor of Christ endured many torments from the wicked king and his associates; he suffered both exile, and humiliation, and other troubles for his orthodoxy.

After a sufficient time, after many confessional labors, Saint Nikita passed from the earth to the heavenly abodes; God glorified him in heaven before His angels, and on earth before people, for many miracles were performed from his honest relics, healing of all diseases was given to the glory of God, glorified in His saints.
