June 12 is Jeremiah's Day, Isaac's Day. Snakes…
CrimeaPRESS reports:
12 June — usually sowing work is completed on Eremey, since this day marks the beginning of summer. Viburnum is blooming now, and bees are swarming. Also, June 12 was popularly called snake day, since, according to observations, “snake weddings” were held, and the snakes themselves were very aggressive. Therefore, people walked into the fields and forests with caution. It was dangerous to kill snakes, because the Slavs believed that snake relatives would definitely take revenge, and not a single healer could save a person from snake venom.
It is believed that on Isaacia it is almost impossible to recover from a snake bite. If you can’t cancel your trip to the forest, then you should find Veronica and put its flowers in your shoes; in addition, it wouldn’t hurt to take an ash stick with you. According to signs, snakes begin to freeze in a stupor and, as a result, do not attack a person.
Pregnant women who have repeatedly experienced fetal death must go to the river at midnight and swim in it, while reading a special spell.
There was even a saying: “Don’t go into the grass on this day, don’t disturb the forest thickets, don’t torture your fate.” In addition, in Rus’ there was a widespread belief that snakes are associated with many plants, and therefore can influence each other. People often brought a piece of marina root in an amulet, and it was to this that they attributed the properties of driving away snakes. They believed that if you scattered twigs of rue on the edges, snakes would eat them and would certainly die or lose the ability to bite.
In addition, the Slavs endowed emerald with similar properties, although it must be said that this stone was not available to everyone.
Memorial Day of St. Isaac the Confessor
The holy venerable Isaac, confessor of Dalmatia, lived in the 4th century. After taking monastic vows, he performed monastic feats in the desert. During the reign of Emperor Valens (364–378), who was a supporter of the Arian heresy, persecution of the Orthodox began, churches were closed and destroyed. When the news of the persecution reached Saint Isaac, then, as it is related in the kontakion to the saint, “as a faithful saint of God, he was kindled with zeal for the Church of Christ,” Saint Isaac left the desert and came to Constantinople for the consolation and spiritual strengthening of the Orthodox.
At that time, the Gothic tribes began a war against Byzantium and, having captured Thrace, went to Constantinople. When the Byzantine troops left the capital, the Monk Isaac turned to Emperor Valens with the following words: “Tsar, open the churches to the Orthodox, and then the Lord will help you!” The monk repeated his request and prophecy three times, but the emperor did not pay attention to the monk’s words and self-confidently continued on his way. Moreover, the angry Valens ordered the Monk Isaac to be thrown into a deep ravine overgrown with thorny thorns; it was impossible to get out of it, since there was a swamp at the bottom of the ravine.
However, the monk, with the help of God, remained alive. With difficulty he got out of the ditch, caught up with the emperor and again told him: “You wanted to destroy me, but the holy angels brought me out of the abyss. Listen to me, open churches to the Orthodox and defeat your enemies. If you do not listen to me, you will not return alive, but will perish in the fire.” The emperor was surprised at the elder’s courage and ordered his associates Saturninus and Victor to take the monk and keep him in captivity until his return. The saint’s prophecy soon came true: in the battle the Goths began to win, I pursued the Greek troops, and the emperor, who had taken refuge in a barn with straw, together with the Arian military leader, were burned by the attackers. Thus, the Monk Isaac “appeared truly to be a glorious prophet.” Soon after the news of the death of the emperor, the saint was released and from now on was revered as a prophet of God.
