June 12 — Jeremiah's Day, Isaac's Day. «Snake Wedding»…

CrimeaPRESS reports:

12 June — Usually, sowing work is completed on Yeremey, since this day marks the beginning of summer. Now viburnum is blooming, and bees are swarming. Also, June 12 was popularly called serpentine, because, according to observations, “serpentine weddings” were held, and the snakes themselves were very aggressive. Therefore, people went to the fields and the forest with caution. It was dangerous to kill snakes, because the Slavs believed that snake relatives would definitely take revenge, and not a single healer could save a person from snake venom.

It is believed that on Isaac it is almost impossible to recover from a snake bite. If you can not cancel a trip to the forest, then you should find Veronica and put her flowers in your shoes, in addition, it will not be superfluous to take an ash stick with you. According to the signs of the snake, they begin to freeze in a stupor and, as a result, do not attack a person.

Pregnant women who have repeatedly experienced fetal fading need to go to the river at midnight and swim in it, while reading a special plot.

There was even a saying: «Do not go to the grass on this day, do not disturb the forest thickets, do not try fate.» In addition, in Rus’ there was a widespread belief that snakes are associated with many plants, and therefore can influence each other. Often people brought a piece of Maryin root in an amulet, and it was he who was credited with the ability to drive away snakes. They believed that if you scatter branches of rue on the edges, then the snakes will eat them and will surely die or lose the ability to bite.

In addition, the Slavs endowed the emerald with similar properties, although it must be said that this stone was not available to everyone.

Memorial Day of St. Isaac the Confessor

12 JuneThe Holy Monk Isaac, Confessor of Dalmatia, lived in the 4th century. After taking monastic vows, he performed monastic deeds in the desert. During the reign of Emperor Valens (364-378), who was a supporter of the heresy of Arianism, the persecution of the Orthodox began, churches were closed and destroyed. When the news of the persecution reached the Monk Isaac, then, as the kontakion tells the saint, “as a faithful saint of God, according to the Church of Christ, he was kindled with zeal,” Saint Isaac left the wilderness and came to Constantinople for the consolation and spiritual strengthening of the Orthodox.

At that time, the tribes of the Goths began a war against Byzantium and, having captured Thrace, went to Constantinople. When the Byzantine troops left the capital, the Monk Isaac addressed Emperor Valens with the following words: “Tsar, unlock the churches of the Orthodox, and then the Lord will help you!” The monk repeated his request and prophecy three times, but the emperor did not pay attention to the words of the monk and self-confidently continued on his way. Moreover, the angry Valens ordered that the Monk Isaac be thrown into a deep ravine overgrown with thorny thorns; it was impossible to get out of it, as there was a swamp at the bottom of the ravine.

However, with the help of God, the monk remained alive. With difficulty, he got out of the ditch, caught up with the emperor and again said to him: “You wanted to destroy me, but the holy angels brought me out of the abyss. Listen to me, open churches to the Orthodox and defeat your enemies. If you do not listen to me, you will not return alive, but you will perish in the fire.” The emperor was surprised at the elder’s courage and ordered his close associates Saturninus and Victor to take the monk and keep him in captivity until his return. The prophecy of the saint soon came true: in the battle the Goths began to win, I pursued the Greek troops, and the emperor, who had hidden in a shed with straw, together with the Arian commander were burned by the attackers. So the Monk Isaac «appeared truly a glorious prophet.» Soon after the news of the death of the emperor, the saint was released and from now on was revered as a prophet of God.
