June 13 – Eremey the Unharnesser. You can meet Grandfather Zhitny in the fields

CrimeaPRESS reports:

On June 13, sowing work was completed in Rus’, the horses were unharnessed and released to rest. That’s why this day was called the Unharness. They said: “Unharness — sow the edge, unharness the horse.”

The Church today honors the memory of Saint Hermas, one of the seventy apostles. He was a bishop in Philippopolis of Thracia and suffered many persecutions from the pagans while preaching the Christian faith. However, he was not recognized as a martyr, because he died a natural death. However, there is another completely opposite version — they say that Yerma died as a result of long agony. How was it really? The information has long since sunk into oblivion.

People considered June 13 to be an ordinary day. They went about their usual chores, cleaning the huts, working in the gardens, etc. Girls’ get-togethers also continued, preparations were made for weddings and dowries were prepared. Of course, we also watched the weather:

  • On the morning of June 13, there is fog — for mushroom summer.
  • Is the night warm? To a good harvest of vegetables.
  • Does the cuckoo crow loudly? The weather will be fine soon.
  • It rains on June 13 — which means that the harvest, according to signs, will not be rich.
  • The spiders began to weave webs — for good weather.
  • If it was a cloudy, cold day on Eremey Unharness, then the winter will most likely be difficult.
  • With an abundance of dew in the morning, residents expected fine days, but its absence meant the approach of rain.

Name days are celebrated today by: Roman, Nikolai, Boris, Christina.

And our ancestors also believed that on Eremey the Harnesser, after the end of sowing, Zhitny Grandfather (Polevik, Buckwheat) appeared in the fields — the protective spirit of the fields, who looked after the cornfield and guarded it from bad weather. He was represented as a little old man with eyes of different colors, black skin, and instead of hair and beard, his grandfather had ears of corn. He avoided being seen by people, but could be found on the border of the field. To prevent Grandfather from leaving the field, after the harvest one sheaf was left for him, in which he settled.
