June 13 — Yeremey Spreader. You can meet Zhitny grandfather in the fields

CrimeaPRESS reports:

On June 13, in Rus’, the sowing work was completed, the horses were unharnessed and released to rest. Therefore, this day was called the Unslinger. They said: «Unharness — sowing land, unharness the horse.»

The Church today honors the memory of St. Hermas — one of the seventy apostles. He was a bishop in Thracian Philippopolis and endured many persecutions from the pagans, preaching the Christian faith. True, he was not recognized as a martyr, because he died a natural death. However, there is another completely opposite version — they say that Yerma died just the same as a result of long torment. How was it really? The information has long since sunk into oblivion.

The people on June 13 considered an ordinary day. They were engaged in the usual things, cleaned up the huts, worked in the gardens, etc. The girls’ gatherings also continued, preparations were made for weddings and the dowry was prepared. Of course, we also watched the weather:

  • On the morning of June 13, the fog is standing — by the mushroom summer.
  • Is the night warm? To a good harvest of vegetables.
  • Is the cuckoo chirping loudly? Good weather will set in soon.
  • It rains on June 13, which means that the harvest, according to signs, will not be rich.
  • Spiders began to weave a web — to good weather.
  • If a cloudy cold day stood out on Yeremey Raspyagalnik, then the winter is likely to be difficult.
  • With an abundance of dew in the morning, the inhabitants were waiting for fine days, but its absence meant the approach of rain.

Name days are now celebrated by: Roman, Nikolai, Boris, Christina.

And our ancestors also believed that on Yeremey Unharnesser, after the end of sowing, Zhitny grandfather (Polevik, Buckwheat) appeared in the fields — the spirit-protector of the fields, who looked after the cornfield and guarded it from bad weather. He was represented as a little old man with eyes of different colors, black skin, and instead of hair and beard, his grandfather grew ears of corn. He avoided being seen by the people, but he could be found on the edge of the field. So that Zhitny grandfather would not leave the field, after the harvest, one sheaf was left for him, in which he settled.
