June 17 — Mitrofan's Day. Oh, and respect him …

CrimeaPRESS reports:

Or rather, the people called this day — Mitrofan Navoznik. And they respected Mitrofan endlessly, believing that it was he who was the guarantee of the future harvest. On June 17, the land was necessarily fertilized and they said: “Without father manure, do not expect bread from mother earth”, “Good land will take manure once, but they will remember it for nine years”, “You deceive the field once, and it will deceive you ten.” In addition, they called out to the wind and asked him to send rain in the summer in order to get a good harvest in the future.

The church now honors St. Mitrofan, the Metropolitan of Constantinople, who lived in the 3rd-4th centuries. Once Byzantium was visited by Emperor Constantine the Great. Seeing the wisdom and holiness of Mitrofan, he invited him to go with him to Rome. After that, the capital was transferred from Rome and Byzantium, and there Mitrofan became patriarch in 325, which was facilitated by the petition of the emperor at the First Ecumenical Council. The saint died at the age of 117.

As for weather signs, then:

  • Is it raining on Mitrofan? This weather will last another two or three days.
  • Stuffiness during sunrise — to bad weather.
  • The night violet blossomed — by sunny days.
  • On Mitrofan the wind in «boots-walkers» runs — strong winds blow.
  • During the day, do birds fly slowly to their nests? The weather will be wet.
  • Swifts hang high in the air, and then fly low above the ground — to bad weather.
  • The rain stops or goes intermittently, and in the evening fog and dew appear — for good weather.

Name day on June 17 is celebrated: Mitrofan. Ivan, Maria, Martha, Nazar, Peter, Sophia, Julian.
