June 19 – Hilarion Day. Grass out of the field…

CrimeaPRESS reports:

People considered June 19 to be a work day — they began weeding the fields and gardens. They said: “Hillarion has come — extra grass from the field.” Our ancestors were sure that if we did not declare “war” on weeds this day, then in the future we would have to constantly fight them.

The Church today honors the memory of St. Hilarion of Dalmatia, who is also called the New. After all, in the 4th century there lived another Hilarion the Great, whose memory is revered on November 3. Hilarion the New lived in the 9th century. In the Dalmatian monastery he accepted the schema, becoming a disciple of the Monk Gregory Dekapolite. After his death, members of the brethren tried to elect Hilarion to the post of abbot, but he did not want to and did not accept the offer, escaping to Byzantium. However, Patriarch Nicephorus managed to persuade Hilarion, and for 8 years the latter ruled the monastery. In 813, Leo the Armenian, a famous iconoclast, sat on the throne of the emperor. Hilarion went against his will publicly, accusing him of heresy and lies. For this he was subjected to a lot of torture. So, Hilarion was imprisoned, starved and thirsty. Despite this, Hilarion continued to believe in Christ and did not renounce his faith. As a reward, he was given the honor of seeing the angels who carried the soul of Saint Theodore the Studite to heaven.

The signs for today are:

  • Has it gotten very cold? The weather will change for the better.
  • Bees swarm on flowering plants — the day will be clear.
  • Grasshoppers chirp loudly in the field — this means good weather.
  • If the bees quickly fly to their hives, then it will rain soon.
  • Is the quail calling? It will rain.
  • The lark has not been heard in the field since dawn — this means bad weather.
  • Field bindweed opened its flowers on a stormy day — the weather will improve.

Name days on June 19 are celebrated by: Vissarion, George, Hilarion, Lukyan, Susanna, Thekla.
