June 19 — Hilarion Day. To the fields! To the gardens!
CrimeaPRESS reports:
June 19 was considered by the people as a day of labor — they began to weed the fields and gardens. They said: «Illarion came — extra grass out of the field.» Our ancestors were sure that if “war” was not declared on the weeds that day, then in the future they would have to fight constantly.
The Church now honors the memory of St. Hilarion of Dalmatia, who is also called New. After all, another Hilarion the Great lived in the 4th century, whose memory is honored on November 3rd. Illarion the New lived in the 9th century. In the Dalmatian monastery, he accepted the schema, becoming a disciple of the Monk Gregory Dekapolit. After his death, members of the brethren tried to elect Hilarion to the post of abbot, but he did not want to and did not accept the offer, fleeing from this to Byzantium. However, Patriarch Nicephorus managed to persuade Hilarion, and for 8 years the latter managed the monastery. In 813, Leo the Armenian, a well-known iconoclast, sat on the throne of the emperor. Illarion went against his will in public, accusing him of heresy and lies. For this, he was subjected to a lot of torture. So, Illarion was imprisoned, starved and thirsty. Despite this, Hilarion continued to believe in Christ and did not renounce his faith. As a reward, he was honored to see the angels who carried the soul of St. Theodore the Studite to heaven.
The notes for today are:
- Did it get cold? The weather will change for the better.
- Bees swarm on flowering plants — the day will be clear.
- Grasshoppers chirp strongly in the field — for good weather.
- If the bees quickly fly to their hives, then soon it will rain.
- Is the quail screaming? It will rain.
- The lark is not heard in the field since dawn — to bad weather.
- Field bindweed opened flowers on a rainy day — the weather will improve.
Name days on June 19 are celebrated by: Vissarion, George, Hilarion, Lukyan, Susanna, Thekla.
