June 22 – Day of Cyril of Alexandria. The nights are short
CrimeaPRESS reports:
The shortest nights of the year begin on June 22. At the same time, summer fully comes into its own. Our ancestors believed that on this day the sun gives up all its power. They said: “Since Kirill’s day, what the sun gives is in the peasant’s barn.” That is why, on June 22, a large number of rituals were performed to appease the sun and obtain a rich harvest.
The church today honors the memory of St. Cyril, also known as the Archbishop of Alexandria. He was a theologian and writer. At one time, he was actively involved in the interpretation of the Holy Scriptures: he explained incomprehensible points to parishioners, and converted many to the faith. He fought long and hard against heretics and manifestations of paganism in society. He ruled the church for 32 years and died of natural causes in 444, leaving behind a large number of works.
The signs for today are:
- Strawberries are red — sowing oats is in vain.
- The flowering of rye is the beginning of haymaking.
- It’s the end of spring, the beginning of summer for Kirill.
- Kirill has strength from the earth.
- The earth gives power to the sun on Kirill.
Name days are celebrated today by: Thekla, Alexander, Alexey, Ivan, Kirill, Maria, Martha.
