June 22 — Day of Cyril of Alexandria. The nights are short
CrimeaPRESS reports:
From June 22, the shortest nights of the year begin. In this case, summer fully comes into its own. Our ancestors believed that on this day the sun gives all its strength. They said: «Since Cyril’s day — what the sun gives, then the peasant has in the barn.» That is why, on June 22, a large number of rituals were performed to appease the sun and get a rich harvest.
The church now honors the memory of St. Cyril, also known as the Archbishop of Alexandria. He was a theologian and writer. At one time he was actively engaged in the interpretation of Holy Scripture: he explained incomprehensible moments to the parishioners, and converted many to faith. For a long time and stubbornly he fought against heretics and manifestations of paganism in society. For 32 years he ruled the church and died a natural death in 444, leaving behind a large number of works.
The notes for today are:
- Strawberries are red — sow oats in vain.
- The flowering of rye is the beginning of haymaking.
- On Cyril, the end of spring, the beginning of summer.
- Cyril has strength from the earth.
- On Cyril, the earth gives strength to the sun.
Name days are celebrated today: Thekla, Alexander, Alexei, Ivan, Cyril, Maria, Martha.
