June 26 — Akulina Day of the buckwheat. Eat porridge!

People’s Akulina Day was listed as a cereal holiday. The peasants prepared porridge, put them out into the street and treated them to the poor. They said: «The buckwheat porridge is our mother, and the bread with rye is our father.» The beggars, in gratitude for the treat, wished the owners of wealth and prosperity so that buckwheat would be well spoiled. But! In any case, they did not drink milk on shark porridge. There was a sign that on this day it becomes “shark”, harmful to health, because cattle can become frantic from insect bites. Such fear was associated with the fact that on June 26, blind people, gadflies that bite animals appear. They tried to expel the homemade cattle to the pastures in the morning, and to be driven in the stable at noon, hoping thus protect them from insects. Therefore, by the way, this day was also called — «Enjoy the tails.» Cattle behaved very restless at this time. So, the cows ran through the meadows, fanning their tails, and the people said that cattle were furious from the heat.

The church on June 26 honors the memory of the Holy Martyr Akulina. She lived in the III century and from childhood she wanted to serve Jesus. She also tried to instruct the true path and her friends. During the persecution of not Christians, she was arrested and imprisoned in prison, and then — executed. The tormentors did not even take into account the age of Akulina — at the time of death she was only 12 years old. First, she was scourged with hot rods and drilled her head, but the angel resurrected the obstetrician. After that, she was chopped off.
