June 27 is the Day of Elisha Buckwheat. Is the sky getting greedy?
CrimeaPRESS reports:
Why Grechkosey? Because on June 27 our ancestors continued to sow buckwheat. At the same time they really hoped that there would be rain. If the sky was “greedy” and did not give showers, so necessary for the ripening shoots, then they would chop nettles on Elisha, knocking out the stinging juice from them. They believed that the nettle juice splashed onto the sky would definitely burn the firmament and a blessed rain would immediately pour down.
It was also customary to bless clothes on this day. It was believed that the person who wears it will be happy throughout the year. They did the same with clothes that were inherited or given as a gift. It was customary to perform the ritual only with things that were purchased after the New Year and worn no more than 3 times. It was also possible on June 27 to consecrate outfits in which people felt uncomfortable.
The Church today honors the memory of the holy prophet Elisha. He lived in IX BC. Glorious because he was a student and servant of the prophet Elijah, and was present during his ascension to heaven. They also spoke about the prophecies of Elisha under all four kings of Israel. Elisha, according to legend, performed a large number of miracles, in particular, he raised the dead.
