June 28 — St. Vitus Day. Keep an eye on the cattle

CrimeaPRESS reports:

And this day was also popularly called — Fit, Modest, Amos. The main task on June 28 was to strictly monitor the cattle so that it did not wander into the fields. Otherwise, it was impossible to save the cow, which had eaten too much of the ripening grain — it was so inflated. Even the patron saint of this day, Modest, was unable to cure sick cattle. And he, by the way, was revered in the Russian North as a protector of livestock, as evidenced by the few icons where he is depicted with Flor, Blasius and Laurus.

And who is Wit (Fit)? This is a martyr who lived in the period of early Christianity. Unfortunately, to date, reliable historical information about his life has not been preserved — only church traditions remain, according to which Vit was born in Sicily in a pagan family. His father was a local senator. However, Vit meets a mentor who preached faith in Christ (his name is unknown), after which he accepts Christianity and goes to Rome. It was Saint Vitus who cast out the demon from the emperor Diocletian. Initially, the latter wanted to force Vitus to pray and make sacrifices to idols. However, he refused, and as a result, Vit was thrown into a cage where there were hungry lions. God saved Vit from death, and the animals did not touch him. After that, the emperor ordered Vita to be boiled in boiling oil.

As for weather signs:

  • Large dews — to fertility, frequent fogs — to rains.
  • Grasshoppers chirp louder than usual — to precipitation.
  • The haystack wears wide leaves and closes their stacks with them — to bad weather.
  • Before bad weather, sheep jump and fight.
  • Piglets constantly squeal — to dampness.
  • In the pasture, the cattle breathes heavily and noisily — it will rain soon
  • Before a thunderstorm, sheep and cows themselves rush from the pasture under a canopy.
  • The flowers of the field thistle did not open all day — tomorrow it will rain.
  • Cirrus clouds from the west bring lingering bad weather.
  • The direction of the wind changes counterclockwise — the bad weather will be long.
