June 28 – St. Vitus Day. Watch out for the cattle!

CrimeaPRESS reports:

People also called this day Fit, Modest, Amos. The main task on June 28 was to strictly monitor the cattle so that they did not wander into the fields. Otherwise, it was impossible to save a cow that had eaten too much ripening grain — it was so bloated. Even the patron saint of this day, Modest, was unable to cure sick cattle. And he, by the way, in the Russian North was revered as a protector of livestock, as evidenced by the few icons where he is depicted with Florus, Blasius and Laurus.

And who is Vit (Fit)? This is a martyr who lived during the period of early Christianity. Unfortunately, today no reliable historical information about his life has been preserved — only church traditions remain, according to which Vitus was born in Sicily into a pagan family. His father was a local senator. However, Vit meets a mentor who preached faith in Christ (his name is unknown), after which he converts to Christianity and goes to Rome. It was Saint Vitus who cast out the demon from Emperor Diocletian. Initially, the latter wanted to force Vitus to pray and make sacrifices to idols. However, he refused, and as a result, Vita was thrown into a cage where there were hungry lions. God saved Vitus from death, and the animals did not touch him. After this, the emperor ordered Vitus to be boiled in boiling oil.

Regarding weather signs:

  • Heavy dew — to fertility, frequent fogs — to rain.
  • Grasshoppers chirp louder than usual — this means precipitation.
  • The hay shed wears wide leaves and covers its stacks with them — a sign of bad weather.
  • Before bad weather, sheep jump and fight.
  • Piglets constantly squealing means dampness.
  • In the pasture, the cattle are breathing heavily and noisily — it means it will rain soon
  • Before a thunderstorm, sheep and cows themselves rush from the pasture to the shelter.
  • The flowers of the field sow thistle have not opened all day — there will be precipitation tomorrow.
  • Cirrus clouds from the west bring lingering bad weather.
  • The direction of the wind changes counterclockwise — the bad weather will last.

Name days are celebrated today: Gregory, Kasyan, Lazar, Fedor, Mikhail, Modest.
