June 29 — Tikhon's Day. They say summer is ripe…
CrimeaPRESS reports:
On June 29, people believed, the young summer ends, the mature one begins. They said: “The sun goes quieter on Tikhon, and the birds do not sing that day, except for the nightingale and the cuckoo.” They tried to prepare potions that day, because they were sure that herbs now acquire a special healing power.
And on this day, the peasants always arranged a clean-up. This was the name of the feast for the workers gathered to help the neighbors: they were called in order to take out and level the manure in the fields. They were treated to dinner, homebrew and wine. The feast necessarily ended with games and songs. The very name of this action — «cleaning» — meant work for food.
The church today honors the memory of St. Tikhon, who lived on the island of Cyprus in the city of Amaphunta. He became famous for fighting the manifestation of paganism, destroying temples and preaching Christianity. At the same time, Tikhon, legends say, was a very merciful and kind person. By the way, they prayed to him, asking him to give a rich harvest. It was also believed that Tikhon’s prayer would help moderate toothache.
As for weather signs:
