The people believed that the real summer begins on June 6. They said: «The rosehip blooms — the blush leads the year.» This plant for our ancestors personified true love and was a symbol of beauty and youth.
The healing properties of rosehips were also very appreciated. With it, it was customary to heal wounds, clean blood, treat a cold. And among young girls, the belief was widespread that washing water, which was an infusion on the rosehip, would preserve youth and beauty.
On June 6, according to the national calendar, green or summer Christmas time began, which will last until June 13. Houses were decorated with plants and flowers, wreaths curled on birches.
The church now honors the memory of the miracle worker Simeon Stolpnik. He monitored in the Syrian desert, where he founded a new type of ascetic life, called pillar. Its essence was that Simeon staged a pillar of several meters high, and then climbed on him and settled there. The pillar stood around the clock and constantly prayed, steadily enduring the heat and cold. In food, he only used wheat swollen in water. He was learned about his unprecedented feat in the whole Christian world.
