June 6 is the Day of Simeon the Stylite. Rosehip blooms
CrimeaPRESS reports:
The people believed that the real summer begins on June 6. They said: «The rosehip blooms — the blush of the year leads.» This plant for our ancestors personified true love and was a symbol of beauty and youth.
The medicinal properties of wild rose were also highly valued. With its help, it was customary to heal wounds, cleanse the blood, treat a cold. And among young girls, there was a widespread belief that washing with water, which was infused with rose hips, would help preserve youth and beauty.
On June 6, according to the folk calendar, green or summer Christmas time began, which will last until June 13. Houses were decorated with plants and flowers, wreaths were curled on birches.
The church today honors the memory of the miracle worker Simeon the Stylite. He spent monasticism in the Syrian desert, where he founded a new kind of ascetic life called pilgrimage. Its essence was that Simeon made a pillar several meters high, and then climbed on it and settled there. The stylite stood around the clock and prayed unceasingly, steadfastly enduring the heat and cold. For food, he ate only wheat that had swollen in water. His unprecedented feat was known throughout the Christian world.
Signs for June 6 are as follows:
- Does wild rose bloom wildly on Simeon the Stylite? It is worth waiting for a noble biting crucian.
- If the rosehip flowers smell stronger than usual, then there will be a downpour.
- Water lily buds on the water surface indicate warming.
- If in the rain the rainbow is formed from north to south, then the bad weather will be long.
- Does the wind blow along the current? There will be cloudless weather.
