Karaites of Yevpatoria celebrated the 430th anniversary of their community
CrimeaPRESS reports:
An event dedicated to the 430th anniversary of the documentary evidence of the formation of the Karaite community in Evpatoria was held in the Karaite kenas.
It is difficult to name the exact date of the settlement of the Karaites in Evpatoria; early evidence of their residence is a tombstone inscription from the Evpatoria cemetery, which dates back to 1593— said the city administration.
The Karaites of Evpatoria were congratulated by city leaders. Community members were presented with awards and certificates.
The contribution of the Karaites to the development of our city is difficult to overestimate, as is recalled by the names of some streets and the monument to the outstanding mayor Semyon Duvan– noted the head of the administration of Yevpatoria Elena Demidova.
Crimean Karaites are a small indigenous people of the peninsula. According to the 2014 census, 545 Karaites lived in Crimea, 135 of them in Yevpatoria. The largest number of Karaites on the peninsula was recorded in 1914 — 14,000 people.
