Kerch celebrated its anniversary — the 50th anniversary of the awarding of the honorary title “Hero City”

On September 14, 1973, by Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, the city of Kerch was awarded the honorary title “Hero City” for outstanding services to the Motherland, mass heroism, courage and fortitude shown by the defenders of Kerch and soldiers of the Soviet Army, Navy and Aviation during the Great Patriotic War war and to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the defeat of fascist troops during the liberation of Crimea.

In honor of the anniversary, a solemn meeting was held at the top of Mount Mithridates. The memory of those killed in the battles for the liberation of Kerch was honored by honored guests — First Deputy Chairman of the State Council of the Republic of Crimea Efim Fiks, deputies of the State Council of the Republic, heads of municipalities and regions of Crimea, head of the municipality Olga Solodilova, deputies of the Kerch City Council, representatives of the administration, veterans of Kerch, youth.

The title “Hero City” is the highest degree of distinction, which was approved by the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR on May 8, 1965. This highest title was awarded to 12 cities of the Soviet Union and the Brest fortress.

Efim Fiks congratulated the people of Kerch on the holiday, wished them to always remember and honor history, love their city and take care of it.

Receiving the honorary title by the city is a tribute to the courage of local residents and the heroism of the Red Army soldiers who gave their lives in defense of the Motherland. Today, the strength and significance of the high title of “Hero City” lies in the labor feats of Kerch residents in all spheres of activity. Particular pride is instilled in the young guys who are now in the zone of a special military operation, like their grandfathers and great-grandfathers once upon a time, showing unparalleled courage and heroism, bravery and readiness for self-sacrifice in the name of the Fatherland. I am sure that the valiant traditions that originated in the hero city of Kerch will forever live in the hearts of its residents and all Crimeans, passed on from generation to generation“Efim Fiks emphasized, wishing the city and all Kerchan residents success and prosperity.

According to established tradition, those present laid flowers at the Obelisk of Glory, honored those who fell during the Great Patriotic War with a minute of silence, and also laid a time capsule with a message to descendants, which was bequeathed to be opened in 50 years.

At a ceremonial meeting held at the Korabel Palace of Culture, the first vice-speaker presented the Kerch residents with Certificates of the Presidium, valuable gifts and Gratitude from the Chairman of the State Council of the Republic of Crimea, Vladimir Konstantinov, for his significant personal contribution to the socio-economic development of the city.
