KFU develops biologically safe herbicides

CrimeaPRESS reports:

Scientists of the Crimean Federal University. VI Vernadsky develop biologically safe herbicides. New preparations were synthesized on the basis of a modified compound 2,4-D, a derivative of dichlorophenoxyacetic acid, which is now part of many herbicides. The uniqueness of new drugs is that while maintaining activity, they exhibit less toxicity.

On the one hand, we modified this compound, and on the other hand, we used a hypothesis based on the fact that soils in any case contain trace elements: calcium, sodium salts, manganese, zinc, and others. And in any case, such herbicides will react with these components, so we set ourselves two tasks: to find out, firstly, how the activity of the drug changes when interacting with soil metals, and secondly, can this product be used as an independent additive for plant control, — the press service of the university quotes the director of the Institute of Biochemical Technologies, Ecology and Pharmacy of KFU. V. I. Vernadsky Alexey Gusev.

In the course of the research, scientists obtained a new organic derivative 2,4-D, as well as zinc derivatives based on it, and conducted an analysis of the general toxicity, which showed that many microorganisms perceive this compound as a growth factor, and some microorganisms begin to actively multiply in it.

We have also found that these new compounds are most active in the control of dicotyledonous weeds. We have selected two drugs that show the maximum activity, and we plan to transfer them to field trials in order to confirm or refute the results obtained in greenhouse conditions.— notes Alexey Gusev.

According to him, experts should check how the drug will affect microorganisms in the soil, whether it will accumulate in it and how it will affect subsequent yields. The research will take several years.

The project is being implemented as part of the Priority 2030 strategic academic leadership program.
