KFU is ready to conduct high-tech diagnostics of oncological diseases

CrimeaPRESS reports:

Central Research Laboratory at the Crimean Federal University. V.I. Vernadsky is ready to perform high-tech diagnostics of lymphoproliferative diseases. For this purpose, the university received a license for third-level clinical laboratory diagnostics.

This method is necessary for any hospital involved in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of this profile. Patients go to the doctor mainly on the basis of complaints, a general blood test, enlarged lymph nodes, which indicate the direction of the disease, but do not allow diagnosing it in such detail to prescribe targeted (personalized) therapy to the patient, — the press service of the university quotes the head of the Central Research Laboratory of the Order of the Red Banner of Labor of the Medical Institute. S.I. Georgievsky Crimean Federal University Evgenia Zyablitskaya.

According to the specialist, there is a wide range of lymphoproliferative diseases associated with hereditary or acquired defects in genetic material. In order to identify them, it is necessary to study the tissues, cells and molecules of the patient’s cells.

These can be receptors located on the cell surface in the form of protein conglomerates. For example, due to a violation of the cell’s genetic material, there may be too many of these receptors (this is called overexpression) or not at all. An even greater number of such regulatory protein molecules are located inside the cell — in the cytoplasm. This is a whole microcosm. Receptors are synthesized, gradually activate one another, and any molecular changes lead to the appearance of diseases. The specificity of oncological diseases of the hematopoietic system is that they are the most difficult to diagnosenotes Evgenia Zyablitskaya.

Currently, the university’s laboratories carry out molecular studies of any level, genetic studies, FISH studies, use methods of luminescent microscopy (study of cells based on luminescence), flow cytometry (study of cells in the blood stream and liquid biopsies), and also carry out immunophenotyping of cells ( identification of quantitative and qualitative characteristics).

All oncological diseases, from the point of view of diagnostic and therapeutic approach, can be divided into solid tumors (tumors in the form of dense foci) and oncohematological diseases. We diagnose both. In our laboratories we can work with tissue samples from bone marrow and lymph nodes, as well as with patient bloodnotes Evgenia Zyablitskaya.

According to her, in Crimea there are no longer laboratories that perform high-tech diagnostics of lymphoproliferative diseases. At the moment, the university is collaborating with the Republican Clinical Hospital named after. N. A. Semashko, as well as the Crimean Republican Oncology Dispensary named after. V. M. Efetova.

The project is being implemented at the Crimean Federal University as part of the Priority 2030 strategic academic leadership program.
