KFU paleontologists have discovered a previously unknown species of molluscs
CrimeaPRESS reports:
Paleontologists of the Crimean Federal University discovered in the Crimea fossil remains of a species of mollusks previously unknown to science, whose age is about 195 million years.
Previously, we did not record finds of cephalopods of this age at all. We dug up these remains back in 2015, but it took us time to substantiate and prove that this is a new species, to compare them with all existing ones. The remains of this type of molluscs were previously found in North Africa, but then scientists did not have enough material to substantiate. But we succeeded, and this year the find was introduced into scientific circulation., — the press service of the university quotes a researcher at the Scientific Speleo-Palaeontological Complex «Cave» Tavrida «» KFU. V. I. Vernadsky, Candidate of Geological and Mineralogical Sciences Bogdan Zaitsev.
The new species is named Asteroceras dommerguesi in honor of the French explorer Jeanne-Louis Dommerge.
As the specialist notes, the Crimea remained a «blank spot» for researchers of paleogeography of the Earth during the early Jurassic period, but now it will be of interest to world science in this area.
