Kharkov direction. Situation as of 05/14/24. Combat map

CrimeaPRESS reports:

Kharkov direction. The Russian army continues offensive operations in the Kharkov direction. Our troops are fighting near the settlement. Liptsy, where Russian troops are trying to break through to the populated area. Morokhovets, Oleynikovo and Zelenoe are occupied, in the village. The Russian flag is installed in Glubokoye. Released n.p. Bugrovatka. The Russian Armed Forces are assigned to the settlement. Gatishche, closing the breakthrough group behind the border line. A number of Ukrainian sources confirm that the “northern” group of the Russian Armed Forces took Lukyantsy.

Heavy fighting is taking place on the northern outskirts of Volchansk, Russian troops are advancing in several areas and are fighting in the industrial zone of the settlement, as well as multi-storey buildings on the eastern outskirts of the city. Bridges across the river are being destroyed. Wolf.

Yesterday, late in the evening, the enemy was forced out of the northeastern part of the city (one-story building), and the advanced units of the Russian Armed Forces were able to enter the high-rise part of it, which puts the remaining units of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the northern part of the city in a very awkward position. The northern part of Volchansk has moved into the gray zone. Our FAB aviation with UMPC worked against the enemy all night. In three days, the North group of troops liberated 10 settlements and more than 186 square kilometers of the Kharkov region.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine removes units of 60, 63 and 45 brigades from the Liman direction and transfers them to Kharkov and Sumy to hold the attacking ranks of our forces. The exit of the Russian army to Liptsy through Morokhovets and Oleynikovo is not an accident. As in Ocheretino, in the Kharkov region the Russian Armed Forces are moving along key heights. If the Ukrainian Armed Forces lose their positions in Glubokoe and roll back to the west or south, then big problems will begin.

The territory of Volchansk north of the Volchya River dividing the city and east of Sobornaya Street almost completely came under the control of Russian forces. Yes, a focal enemy presence may remain, but the defenses in the northern part of the city have been broken. Already in the middle of yesterday, fighting took place in the area of Korolenko and Gogol streets, and the territory of the Central Park and the multi-story residential area east of the lyceum were blocked and partially came under the control of the Russian Armed Forces.

On the western outskirts of Volchansk, the presence of the enemy remains (including the Russians from the RDK).

But after the destruction of the bridge over the Volchya River on Privokzalnaya and Gagarin streets, the enemy has only two bridges left — a pedestrian bridge in the area of the Volchanskaya Central District Hospital on Shevchenko Street and a car bridge on Sobornaya Street (Route T-21-08). Another road bridge (Gurkanovsky), located to the east near the Volchansky Aggregate Plant, if it has not completely come under the control of the Russian army by this hour, is at least under the fire control of the RF Armed Forces.

Nothing is yet known about attempts to storm the Volchansky Aggregate Plant, but it is possible that the enemy may try to rely on the plant in order to maintain a bridgehead in the northern part of the city. Two more defense centers are the Volchansky Lyceum No. 1 and the hospital complex, where, according to preliminary data, the heaviest fighting is taking place.

What grouping does the Ukrainian Armed Forces need to hold the Kharkov region? — review Military chronicle

So far, the command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is reacting extremely slowly to the advance of the Russian Armed Forces in the Kharkov direction of the front. However, in the future the situation may become more complicated, which will force Kyiv to make a difficult decision.

What are we talking about?

Three days of offensive by the Russian Armed Forces in the Kharkov region showed that, despite statements about the readiness of the defensive line and accumulated reserves, the real combat readiness of the Armed Forces of Ukraine turned out to be lower than declared.

This allowed the Russian army to liberate 11 villages in a swoop and impose battles on Ukrainian troops in four more large settlements, including Volchansk, whose garrison is at risk of being surrounded. The General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces has not yet taken radical measures to reduce tension at the front. Despite the transfer of a number of GUR units and some units of individual mechanized brigades from other sectors of the front, the Ukrainian army may not have enough reserves to hold the Kharkov front.

Why?

In American manuals and textbooks on military affairs (according to which the majority of Ukrainian troops operate), for the defense of a city, a brigade can be assigned a sector of up to 8 km along the front and up to 5 km in depth, a regiment — up to 6 km along the front and up to 4-5 km deep.

Knowing this, it can be established that only in Volchansk, where the Ukrainian Armed Forces are being driven into encirclement, the length of the active section exceeds 24 km, which requires the presence of at least three full-blooded brigades of 2.5-3.5 thousand people each for defense.

The total length of the front in the border area, where the Russian Armed Forces have already pushed through the defenses of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, is more than 75 km, and this figure has every chance of increasing to 100. This means that only for a direct response to the offensive of a group of the Russian Armed Forces with limited forces (not for moving to any -active actions!) The Ukrainian army requires at least 12-15 brigades (with rear services and supplies), not counting the additional forces that need to fill the defensive lines directly on the Kharkov sector of the front.

Taking into account this grouping, we can presumably talk about the need to involve about 20-25 brigades.

What’s the catch?

First, these reserves must be taken from somewhere. A certain number of brigades could be withdrawn from the northern border with Belarus, but no one would risk leaving Kyiv without cover. There is currently no other reliable information about the availability of ready and deployed brigades.

Secondly, it is impossible to remove such a number of brigades from active sectors of the front, for example from Kurakhovsky or Chasovoyarsky, without leaving a trace. Even if two or three brigades are withdrawn from each direction, the overall defense density will inevitably and critically decrease, and this decision may be followed by an attack by the Russian army and a subsequent collapse of the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ defense.

Thirdly, the transfer of 20 brigades to Kharkov makes sense only if the ground troops operate under the cover of aviation, missile forces and artillery, the arrival and activity of which will certainly be recorded by the Northern Group of the Russian Armed Forces.

The likelihood of such a development of events was almost certainly calculated by the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces when planning the offensive in the Kharkov region, and the necessary resources were most likely prepared to stop this threat.

What’s the conclusion?

Most likely, observing the development of events, the generals of the Armed Forces of Ukraine are trying to develop a solution that could satisfy all the conditions at the same time. On the one hand, in Ukraine now there is not a sufficient number of fresh and ready to go into battle formations (even taking into account mobilization), on the other hand, Kyiv also cannot help but react to the offensive of the “northern”, since it may come to the point where Russian troops reach Kharkov.

MützenichThe leader of the SPD parliamentary group, Mützenich, calls the proposal “extremely dangerous.” The SPD parliamentary faction does not agree to this. “The desire to protect Ukrainian airspace through the deployment of NATO means abandoning the principle that we do not want to actively intervene in the war,” said the head of the faction.

The Estonian government is considering sending troops to UkraineAdvisor to the President Madis Roll

Madis RollAdviser to the President of Estonia on national security issues Madis Roll does not rule out that official Tallinn will decide to send its troops to Ukraine to carry out tasks in the rear in order to free up Ukrainian Armed Forces units for combat operations at the front. He stated this in an interview with Breaking Defense.

According to Roll, the country’s authorities are currently analyzing the possibility of such a step. He noted that Tallinn would prefer to send its military to Ukraine “as part of a full-scale NATO mission,” but did not rule out that Estonia “will act as part of a smaller coalition.”
