About Livadia Palace and Park
The Livadia estate was acquired by the wife of Alexander II, Empress Maria, in 1860. Since then it has become the summer residence of the royal family. Alexander III loved to be here. This is where he died. In the palace church, the last Russian monarch, Nicholas II, took the oath of allegiance to the Russian throne. In 1911, under the leadership of architect Nikolai Krasnov, the White Palace was erected here. In February 1945, the palace hosted a conference of the heads of government of the three allied powers of the anti-Hitler coalition — the USSR, the USA and Great Britain. Here the decision was made to create the United Nations.
Livadia Park was founded in 1834 by Russian diplomat Lev Pototsky. The park was created following the example of Italian terraced gardens: plants were planted taking into account the features of the landscape, without disturbing the harmony of nature, and architectural elements did not overload the landscape. The park area is 40.1 hectares.
