Major repairs to the “Sorrowful” memorial have been completed in Simferopol
CrimeaPRESS reports:
The head of the Simferopol administration, Mikhail Afanasyev, visited the “Sorrowful” memorial, where a major renovation was recently completed. Work on the restoration of sculpture and high relief, installation of a drainage system, landscaping of the territory and repair of lighting were carried out at the site. The improvement area was more than 700 square meters.
This is a landmark object for Simferopol, because this year marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Crimean capital from the Nazi invaders. During the temporary fascist occupation of Crimea, a concentration camp was located on the territory of the Krasny state farm. During the two and a half years of the camp’s existence, Nazi executioners killed more than 8,000 Soviet patriots in the area of the camp and the Dubki tract.Mikhail Afanasyev recalled.
On September 30, 1970, on the second kilometer of the Simferopol-Nikolaevka highway, previously unknown places of mass executions were discovered during excavation work. A special commission was created to investigate the atrocities of the Nazis and their accomplices. During the excavations, 28 graves were discovered, from which the remains of 1,480 Soviet citizens were recovered.
In July 1973, at the site of the mass executions of Soviet patriots, the “Sorrowful” memorial complex was erected and a park was laid out.
