March 1-in the afternoon leads Moremean Kikimora

On March 1, the calendar of folk dates is a very remarkable day. Another of those in which pagan principles and Christian began to closely and bizarrely intertwined. According to the religious tradition, on the first day of spring, the saint of Mariamn, the sister of the apostle Philip, counted by the saints in the Orthodox and Catholic churches, is remembered by a kind word. But in Rus’, the righteous man (as it happened, even the ethnographers did not really know) the people “rethought”, changed her name to Moremean and connected Kikimora with the pagan mythical character. The entity that was afraid and represented differently. Some said that it was a twisted and rather ugly old woman. The latter believed that it was a young, black-eyed and white-faced girl, and someone even thought that it was a little girl or a nimble old man. There was also a legend that Maremyana Kikimora is the wife of the brownie and, accordingly, the mistress of the house. With a heavy character: it harms the family in trifles, scares them with different sounds, announces the children, but sometimes Kikimora helps, warning of misfortunes. They believed in Rus’ and the fact that the frosts traditionally standing on March 1 and strong winds are the work of Maremyany.

But no matter how Maremyan-Kikimora is angry, and March 1 is the first day of spring. And among the people this fact rejoiced extremely. It was believed that from now on nature would certainly begin to recover from the cold. In this regard, they praised the pagan god of fertility — Yaril.
