March 16 is Eutropian Day. The Bear is coming…
CrimeaPRESS reports:
On March 16, the church honors the memory of the holy martyr Eutropius of Amasia. Lived at the turn of the third and fourth centuries. During the persecution of Christians, he defended his faith, for which he paid the price along with his brother — he was crucified.
On Eutropian Day, our ancestors revered the Sun and called on it to protect fields and crops from diseases, frosts and pests. They were sure: the luminary hears those who treat him with respect, and will definitely be merciful.
And people also believed that today a bear wakes up and gets out of its den. Therefore, going into the forest on March 16 was strictly prohibited.
As for weather signs, then:
- The starlings have arrived — there will be a rich grain harvest.
- Tits chirp loudly — to the warmth. They tweet sadly and drawn out — there will still be frosts.
- Bullfinches singing under the window means warming. Sitting in flocks in the snow means snowfall.
- At noon, a crow screamed in the south — it will soon become warmer. If she croaks on the north side, cold weather is coming.
- Crows bathe in the snow — for clear weather.
- All the birds have flown to the warmth.
- The wagtails flew to the ice drift.
- Geese fly high — to a big flood. If they fly low, there will be little water.
- The sun has hidden — it will rain.
