The date March 22 is rich in names, and the tradition of this day is serious. Forty forties is the day on which the church honors the memory of the 40 martyrs-warriors of Sebaste who believed in Christ. Famous for the fact that in 320 AD. in the Turkish city of Sebaste they refused to sacrifice to idols. They explained their action simply: they worship the real God, not statues. Did they understand them then? No. The result? The warriors were executed. They plunged them into the icy water of the lake overnight, and in the morning, when none of the martyrs betrayed their faith, their legs were broken. The bodies were taken to the city and burned at the stake.

People associated March 22 with morning frosts. It was believed that they could last for the next 40 days, which is why they called this day “Magpies”.
