May 1 — On this day they tried to plant beets and carrots. In the morning, before sowing, the hostess approached the well and sprayed the seeds with spring water. After that, she threw copper coins into the well — this portended a rich harvest, according to ancient Slavic beliefs. In some villages on May 1, they also went to the river secretly for three nights in a row, waited for dawn and lowered seeds into the water so that no one would jinx the crops.
The people believed that St. Kozma was worried that the peasants did not feel hunger and even during their lifetime it constantly helped those in need. That is why it protects crops from cold and dryness.
May 1: Signs of the day

The night from April 30 to May 1 is considered mystical. For different peoples of the world, this night correlates with the holiday of witches and all evil spirits. In the Slavic tradition, this night is called Zhivin Night or Velesov. Europeans call her Walpurgis Night.
It is believed that in Walpurgiyev the night of the Witches flies onto the Sabbath. There was a belief that the Witches sat on top of brooms and flown up to the mountain, where they spent time in dancing, fun and frantic debauchery.
The holiday received its name in honor of St. Valpurge, which, as a nun, created with many miracles. After death, the nun was ranked to the face of saints. She was depicted on icons with a dog, which symbolized the conductor into the world of the dead and with a triangular mirror that can show the future.
It was believed that in Walpurgiyev the night you can see your future and call for help the Higher Forces, getting into contact with the afterlife. It should be noted that the night from April 30 to May 1 is really special. At least that is what astrologers say. The combinations of Mercury and Venus in Aries establishes a strong connection with the past, which is activated with the help of Pluto, the patron saint of the dead. It turns out that on this night doors are really open to another world and you can make contact with the souls of the dead.
Today, Valpurga, the night has become a holiday, which is entertaining. It is especially actively celebrated in Europe. On this day, they light bonfires, meeting spring and, in order to drive away evil spirits, carnival processions and games are held. However, people still believe in signs and beliefs related to this holiday.
May 1 the church celebrates St. Kuzma’s Day
On May 1, the Orthodox Church venerates the saint Kosm of the Confessor, Bishop of the Halkedon, who opposed the iconocraticism, who is often called the Creator of Canons for the Glory of the Lord. Saint Cosmas, Bishop of Chalkidonsky, and Rev. Avksenty, his associate, lived in the 9th century, while the iconoclasts pursued the adherents of Orthodoxy. Saint Cosmas, a native of Constantinople, went to the monastery in his youth and accepted monastic tonsure. Subsequently, he was ordained in the rank of Bishop of Chalcedon and zealously defended the Orthodox faith from heretics-iconoclasts. Rev. Avksentius was an assistant to the saint in this struggle.
The iconoclasts repeatedly tried to persuade the saint to their side, but he remained faithful to Orthodoxy to the end. Saint Cosmas did not obey the decree of Emperor Leo Armenian on the removal of holy icons from temples. For this, he was expelled from the department and exiled to imprisonment.
When the saint was returned from exile, he, along with the Monk Avksenta, continued to defend the veneration of the holy icons. From constant persecution, St. Cosma weakened with his body, but remained still firmly in spirit. Saint Cosmas and Rev. Avksenti, until the death of the Orthodox faith, was unshakable.
