May 17 — Baklushnikov Day. Do you have a wooden spoon?
Krympress reports:
Why is the Baklushnikov Day? Because it was on May 17 that the peasants prepared the material, from which wooden spoons were then made. And they made them from birch, maple or linden. They were a symbol of prosperity and satiety. The spoons were decorated with painting and carvings. Often they carried them with them. In special beautiful cases, in a boot or behind a belt.
The church now honors the memory of the martyr Pelagei of Tarsia. She lived in the III century in the city of Tars of the Kilican region of Asia Minor. She was the daughter of noble pagans, but, having heard from her familiar Christians a sermon about Jesus Christ the Son of God, believed in Him and wished to keep chastity, dedicating the Lord all her life. For Vera and was rigidly executed — it was burned. The bones of the Holy Pelagia remained intact in fire and were thrown by the Gentiles out of town. Then four lions came from the desert and sat near the bones, not allowing either birds or animals to them. The lions guarded the remains of the saint until Bishop Clinon came to that place. He gathered them and buried them with honor.
